Total patient care, including patient and patient family education, in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatrics, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Dedicated in my service to Mankind, my entire 31-year nursing career has been specialized in Pediatrics, and I have worked in the PICU since 2000 with much float experience in the NICU. After having done extensive personal research since 1994 to find the best wholistic approaches to patient care and education of both my patients and their families, it wasn’t until late 2020 after diving head first into – and experiencing for myself – the whole-food plant-based lifestyle that I felt confident that I had found a truly viable and evidence-based approach: Back to the Basics.

I have been a Physician Associate since 2005, and currently work in Family Medicine. I found Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine on my own when I found that my own health was going downhill. While I was improving my own health, I started using Lifestyle Medicine to improve the health of my patients and family. I have also been teaching free Nutrition/Lifestyle Medicine classes in my community since 2018. I enjoy walking, riding bicycles, traveling, watching sports, and spending time with my wife and family.
I am a primary care provider working in Family Medicine. I provide one on one 30 minute Nutrition/Lifestyle Medicine appointments in office or via Telehealth in the State of Oregon only. I also teach free weekly online Nutrition/Lifestyle Medicine classes with two Physician colleagues, details of which can be found at our class website https://www.livelifestylemedicine.com (The classes are not affiliated with my employer)

I embrace a Food First and Lifestyle Medicine approach to medicine as I continue to recognize the limitations of allopathic medicine in managing chronic disease, while recognizing the challenges that many of us have in implementing healthy lifestyle choices.

Direct Primary Care allows me the opportunity to be the educator and teammate in care.
Throughout my almost 15 years of practice in our traditional healthcare delivery system, the idea of providing an excellent provider to patient relationship has been sold to patients by insurance companies and healthcare systems over and over again. In reality, that level of communication, trust and understanding is rarely attainable when the expectation is to see even 25 patients in one day, let alone the 30 or 40 patients that are being evaluated by one practitioner in some settings.
As the time we have for patients has decreased, the time required to be reimbursed by the insurer has increased. Insurance has dictated what good medical care is by deconstructing the patient-provider relationship and turning it into checkboxes. Clicking boxes is robotic, teaches us not to think for ourselves and generally does not in any way contribute to a functional relationship between patients and providers.
Direct Primary Care is the ladder I’m climbing to get out of those boxes so that I can truly help people. In this model I will be free to practice medicine in its most effective form. Instead of having 5 minutes to talk to my patient about what is really important to them, I will have 45-60 minutes to listen, gather information, educate and participate in shared decision making. In comparison to the almost 2000 patients I had as an employed outpatient primary care provider, my goal is a maximum of 500. My patients will have access to me without having to wait for 3 weeks and without having to explain their needs to several people before ever seeing me.
By making home visits and utilizing technologies such as secured messaging and virtual interaction, I can truly be the trusted resource, teammate, cheerleader, consoler and advocate that I’ve always wanted to be.

Read more…Dr. Young is an Arizona native who grew up in Cave Creek and now lives in north Scottsdale with her husband, Jon, and four kids. She is a currently practicing, board-certified, Emergency Medicine physician working and is certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She graduated medical school from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale, AZ in 2006 and completed Emergency Medicine residency at Maricopa Medical Center in 2009. She has been practicing for 15 years.
As an Emergency Medicine physician, Dr. Young sees patients at their most critical points, frequently on the worst day of their lives. Her job is to stabilize, rule out life-threatening conditions and treat any acute illnesses. Often what brings patients to the emergency department are things that could have been avoided with lifestyle changes. Heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes are among the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. Through lifestyle changes, patients are able to significantly reduce their risk for all of these!
Dr. Young loves working in the emergency department but found herself wishing she had more time to spend with patients. When she sees patients in the ED, she can touch briefly on simple things they can do to take charge of their health, but her interactions are limited by time. She is excited to start Sozo Lifestyle Medicine so that she can change her pace, develop relationships with her patients and help support them as they take charge of their health. Through lifestyle interventions that reverse chronic disease as well as her skillset as an Emergency Medicine physician, she will do her best to help her patients stay healthy and out of the emergency department.
Her hope for Sozo is to create a place of community, health, service, life and joy.
At Sozo Lifestyle Medicine Dr. Young provides care based on the the direct care model. Sozo provides membership-based medical care inspired by the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model. Under the DPC model, the patient pays a monthly membership fee and receives health care directly from the physician. DPC practices do not participate in any insurance plans, allowing physicians to focus on caring for the patient rather than excessive documentation demands and overhead costs associated with billing insurance companies. This means less stress, no co-pays, relaxed visits and direct access to your doctor.

Read more…I am passionate about helping women and their families gain control of their health. I meet you where you are and together we build personalized, integrative plans that focus on building foundations of optimal health. My lifelong interest in promoting and encouraging healthy lifestyles began as a young gymnast years ago. I competed at the elite level, was a member of the U.S. National Team, and earned a full scholarship to the Stanford University Women’s Gymnastics Team. After four years as a Division I NCAA student-athlete, I began training and racing triathlons while earning my master’s degree. After graduating I helped build sports programs for kids in Japan, organized triathlons and led bike tours in the Southwest, and managed the sports program for Special Olympics Nevada. I then spent three years inspiring audience members performing as a professional acrobat in Cirque du Soleil’s KA at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while also continuing to participate in full-distance triathlons. I was then introduced to naturopathic medicine during a 4,500-mile, self-supported bicycle trip with my husband where we witnessed the unequivocal interconnectedness of the environment and health. I was motivated to learn more and earned my naturopathic doctorate degree from Bastyr University while growing our family. I now have my own, small private practice in Maple Valley, WA where I encourage, coach, and help patients live their best life in person and via telemedicine. As a mom of three, I understand the juggle of home, work, school, play, self-care, and all the roles that come with being a mother. My passion is helping you navigate your own juggle so that you can optimize both your own and your family’s health. I cannot wait to hear your story!

As I progressed through my career and took on the care of my aging parents I realized that I did not want to suffer from some of their health problems. I began to read more and more about nutrition and realized that many of the questions that we had during my nutrition fellowship now had real answers. Excellent studies now existed that revealed most if not all chronic diseases and many cancers had their origin in poor nutrtion. My prior eating habits mirrored the Standard American Diet as did my developing chronic diseases…Hypertension, Elevated Lipids, possibly Pre-Diabetes, Artherosclerois, Cardiac Arrythmias, and Obesity. While taking care of my aging parents I did cerebral MRI studies on them and both had small cerebral infarcts too numerous to count. As I read more and more and after attending my first Plantrician Program, I decided overnight to switch my eating profile from the SAD (Standard American Diet) to a Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition lifestyle. My chronic diseases melted away. While I continue practice anesthesia and interventional pain medicine, I have been enhancing my plant-based medical care to both my patients and others that are interested. All of the patients that I come in contact with receive nutritional advice and care along with the care they originally came for. For those that take to heart my nutritional advice and care, the results are nice.
